The simple rule of thumb for credibility was that the "ex player" commentator had to have at least played at the level on which they are commentating, so as to understand what was happening. Worked well for years. 

The inclusion (and over representation) of female ex/current player commentators on the male game is nothing other is just pure woke nonsense that I am hoping this country will soon escape.
